Coopers Fire installed an Open Concertina fire curtain to protect a connecting feature staircase in the heart of this commercial office building in Singapore.
what was the client looking for?
Marina One is a mixed-use development in Marina South, Singapore and a vibrant new growth area for residential, commercial and lifestyle activities. It officially opened in January 2018 and is made up of three areas, Marina One Residences, Marina One East Tower and Marina One West Tower.
On the 16th and 17th floors of the Marina One East Tower are the new offices for the Japanese shipping corporation, Ocean Network Express, also known as ONE. The main contractor, ISG, managed the office fit-out for ONE with the interior fitout company, Update Asia, which comprises of 50,000 sq ft of Grade A office space over the two storeys.
The fit out includes the installation of all mechanical and electrical systems, the latest audio visual and communications equipment, IT and security systems across both floors. The project will see the creation of 31 meeting and conference suites, open and enclosed office areas, two ‘command centres’, a 4,000 sq ft ‘Ocean Café’ at the heart of the office and a connecting feature staircase.
HOW DID WE HELP?
To avoid doors or a lobby at the top and bottom of the feature staircase, the architects, Gensler, designed in a three-sided FireMaster Open Concertina fire curtain to offer the level of fire protection required.
The Coopers Fire only distributor in Singapore, Innivate, successfully bid and won the fire curtain project and installed the fire curtain in November 2017. Innivate are based in Singapore and bring designers cutting edge solutions to their Performance Louvre, Smoke Control, and Aesthetic Facade Designs and unite these with products from the World’s leading product providers.
Coopers Fire have worked with Innivate as a partnership for a number of years and have worked on many projects in the Far East.
Originally the floors were separated but the wish of Gensler and ONE was to have an internal feature staircase to bridge the two floors. As this breaches the horizontal Fire Separation and to avoid a lobby or doors at the top and or bottom of the staircase, they needed to provide a fire curtain solution around the staircase at Level 17.
Gensler liked the design of the FireMaster Concertina given the ‘no guide rails’ feature, meaning the staircase area remained open plan with no obtrusive side guides, like those found on traditional vertical fire curtains.
The whole project had to be installed within a maximum two-week period. Innivate proved their professionalism and efficiency and had the whole fire curtain system installed in an impressive 5 days, including wiring and final connections.
BENEFITS
Innivate were able to work closely with the contractors on this project to satisfy the fire regulations as well as maintaining the building design requirements. As the fire curtain installers it meant that the fire curtain was fully project managed ensuring the final, fitted product satisfied the high quality finish required.
As a distributor of Coopers Fire products, Innivate are able to offer a range of Vertical, Multisided (Concertina) and Horizontal fire and smoke curtains.
Coopers fire curtains are recognised as the modern alternative to firewalls, fire doors and glazing, giving designers the freedom to design modern, open plan spaces without compromising fire safety. They are increasingly specified by designers as a solution for open plan designs.
