Coopers were uniquely placed to meet the very complex requirements to deliver the world’s largest smoke curtain.
A testament to this was a recent award won for the The Great Mosque of Mecca tunnels project in Saudi Arabia. Coopers Fire worked closely with our Saudi Arabian partners, Energy & Building Masters – EBM to win the project and deliver multiple smoke curtains in a short period of time.
The project was completed within an impressively short period of approximately 11 weeks from design to completion, which demonstrates Coopers commitment to delivering projects promptly and efficiently. This timely execution minimized disruptions and showcased our ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.
Project background:
Since 2013, Coopers Fire have been working on the Great Mosque of Mecca – Mataf Tunnels project, also known as Al-Masjid al-Haram which contains a vast network of underground tunnels.
Ensuring fire safety in the tunnels of the Great Mosque of Mecca is of paramount importance due to the large number of people who visit the mosque daily. To ensure users of the tunnels are protected from smoke, a series of automated smoke curtains were designed and installed strategically positioned along the tunnels. These are the longest smoke curtains ever installed by Coopers Fire with the largest continual run being 927 metres.
Two non-identical tunnels each running for approximately 1 km, deviating in direction and elevation meant that the ceiling and floor were constantly undulating which required a bespoke solution. Coopers Fire Technical and Engineering Team designed a system that would allow for a continuous undulation whilst ensuring that all the curtains would ascend perfectly into the ornate ceiling and descend perfectly to the floor in one go.
Energy and Building Masters (EBM) are the official distributor for Coopers Fire in Saudi Arabia. EBM are specialist contractors and installers of fire and smoke curtains and were engaged to install the smoke curtains in accordance with the approved design.
