Most of the time, kidneys work normally without any issues but sometimes they can be damaged or stop working so well. This is known as chronic kidney disease (CKD). When your kidneys fail, harmful wastes build up in your body and treatment is required to replace the work of the failed kidneys. Early diagnosis and treatment, as well as changes to diet and lifestyle, are vital and can often help slow down or prevent any further damage. Some other types of kidney disease, including inherited conditions, are not preventable but can be managed. Although CKD can be treated there is currently no cure. If CKD is undetected or is not managed well, it can progress to kidney failure, which is fatal without treatment. Patients with kidney failure will need regular dialysis or a kidney transplant. Sadly, mortality continues to increase yearly, and kidney disease is projected to be the 5th leading cause of death by 2040.
Worldwide, around one in ten people have CKD, for which there is no cure. In the UK, 20 people develop kidney failure each day, and 64,000 are reliant on dialysis or a transplant to stay alive. Five people every week die while on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Over the past decade some progress has been made in treating kidney disease, but not nearly enough and kidney disease continues to rise.
Kidney Research UK is the leading kidney research charity in the UK, their mission is to end kidney disease. As well as funding vital research Kidney research UK aim to raise awareness, so people know how to look after their kidney health and help prevent CKD.
